A Cultural and Architectural Icon

Alejandro Vega Beuvrin has completed the permanent installation of two monumental sculptures at the Changchun CR Center, a landmark mixed-use development in northeast China.
This commission marks the artist’s first permanent public intervention in Asia and situates his work within one of the most ambitious architectural complexes in the region.

Located at the intersection of Changchun’s main economic axis, the CR Center rises 289 meters, redefining the city’s skyline. Designed by Goettsch Partners (Chicago) and Lead8 (Hong Kong) for China Resources Land Limited, the development integrates offices, high-end residences, and the luxury MixC retail center. Its guiding theme—“Nature – Humanity – Future”—reflects Changchun’s identity as a city of resilience, innovation, and renewal.

Snowmelt Dawn and Eternal Blossom

Vega Beuvrin’s sculptures, Snowmelt Dawn (雪融之曙) and Eternal Blossom (长春之蕊), are installed at the southwest and southeast points of the tower’s 14-meter-high main lobby. Executed in mirror-polished stainless steel with matte, sandblasted, and gradient finishes, both works serve as spatial anchors and visual attractors, engaging directly with the building’s architectural rhythm and cultural symbolism.

Title Dimensions (cm) Finish / Concept
Snowmelt Dawn (雪融之曙) 540 × 290 × 180 Mirror-Polished Silver – Symbolizing resilience and purity
Eternal Blossom (长春之蕊) 260 × 288 × 116 Gold and Orange – Representing vitality and the spirit of Changchun

The mirror surfaces reflect the movement of visitors and the surrounding architecture, while the orange and gold tones evoke both the corporate identity of China Resources and the city’s emblematic Clivia flower, symbol of perseverance and renewal.

As Vega Beuvrin explains:

“Ice is the medal of Changchun, mirror is its eye. Ice melts into spring water, and the flower of life remains eternal.”

Dialogue Between Art and Architecture

The two sculptures create a dialogue between material and light, reflection and structure, offering a spatial experience that evolves with each viewer’s perspective.
Their geometry complements the proportions of the grand lobby, emphasizing balance, rhythm, and continuity within the architectural composition.

Technically, the works were engineered with structural precision, fabricated from 3–5 mm stainless steel plates with internal reinforcement and certified verification. Their combination of polished, matte, and pigmented finishes achieves a visual equilibrium between opacity and reflection, stability and transformation.

The installation not only integrates sculpture within the architectural framework but also reinforces the building’s conceptual essence—a celebration of transformation, resilience, and continuity that defines both Changchun and the artist’s practice.

Collaborative Vision

This project was realized through the collaboration of:

  • China Resources Land – Developer and patron
  • Goettsch Partners – Architectural integration
  • Purple Roof Public Art (羅浮紫) – Curatorial and conceptual execution

To commemorate the installation, Alejandro Vega Beuvrin will deliver a keynote address at the CR Center’s Thematic Opening Forum, presenting his thesis:

“How to smartly merge art and spatial relationships using architectural theory.”

An Enduring Presence in Asia

With Snowmelt Dawn and Eternal Blossom, Vega Beuvrin expands his exploration of geometry, perception, and space into the urban and cultural landscape of Asia.
These sculptures stand as symbols of renewal and dialogue, embodying the artist’s vision of contemporary sculpture as a discipline that transcends material form to become a bridge between art, architecture, and human experience.
